>Thoughts / Notes on Artaud’s Theater and Its Double

>I’m into Artaud’s discussion of mise en scene. He discusses it as more important than dialogue, and I tend to think about music in the same way.

He is ashamed of discussing metaphysics, yet he wants to invoke otherness and intangibility. So he relies on parallels, on doubling as a way of getting at a distinction between the material and the spiritual.

At the same time he wants to destroy western notions of binary thinking. He celebrates Balinese theater for its ability to synthesize sound and gesture. He compares the theatre to alchemical processes. He compares the theatre to the plague. The spiritual punishment manifests and spreads above the intention of the individual.
